High Phenolic Olive Oil as a New Treatment for NF1 Patients

The promising results of a clinical study using high phenolic olive oil against Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) were presented at the Olympia Health and Nutrition Awards. Conducted by the University of Minnesota Cancer Center, this study utilized over half a ton of olive oil, primarily from the Corfiot Lianolia variety, generously donated by Olive Fabrica “The Governor.”

Understanding Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)

NF1 is a genetic disorder that can cause benign and malignant tumors. Approximately 1 in 2,500 people are born with NF1. Early in life, tumors can develop on the optic nerve, sometimes leading to blindness. Children and young adults with NF1 can develop malignant nerve sheath tumors, and women with NF1 have a higher risk of breast cancer compared to the general population. Adults may develop skin neurofibromas, severe headaches, and high blood pressure.

The Clinical Study

The study is led by Dr. Pavlina Sverak, Dr. Christopher Moertel, and Dr. David Largaespada, a leading expert on NF1. Preclinical research showed that oleocanthal from olive oil and curcumin could shrink NF1 tumors. The clinical trial involves increasing doses of curcumin with consistent doses of olive oil over a year, approved by the FDA and ongoing at the University of Minnesota.
