At Corfu Olive Tours, we don’t just walk among ancient olive groves, we carry forward the weight of history, the value of tradition, and the responsibility to protect one of Corfu’s greatest agricultural legacies: the Lianolia olive variety.

The Time Has Come for Lianolia Olive Variety
One of our founders, Spyros Dafnis, has publicly spoken on Kerkyrasimera.gr about the urgent need for institutional recognition of this historic olive variety. His words weren’t just a call to action for local producers—they were a wake-up call for Greece as a whole.
What Is Lianolia Corfu and Why It Matters
The Lianolia Olive Variety is not just any olive tree.
It has been cultivated on the island for over a thousand years, forming the backbone of Corfu’s rural economy and contributing to its unique natural landscape. These trees, with their tall trunks and dense canopies, are not only beautiful, they produce an olive oil known for its exceptional antioxidant content, elegant bitterness, and peppery finish.
Yet, despite its history, Lianolia remains institutionally invisible.
It is not officially registered or protected as a distinct Greek variety, leaving its future vulnerable to market pressures, mislabeling, and cultural erosion.

The Problem: No Name, No Protection
Without institutional recognition, Lianolia olive variety, cannot be marketed with its name, nor can it receive the protections and certification that would allow it to compete in global markets as a branded PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) product. This also prevents producers from fully educating consumers about its health benefits and historical relevance, turning Corfu’s most important olive into a silent witness of its own marginalization.
Spyros Dafnis, a passionate advocate for the land and its produce, put it simply:
“If we don’t protect our Lianolia now, future generations will speak of it only in the past tense.”

Why Recognition Would Change Everything
Institutional recognition of Lianolia olive variety as Lianolia Corfu would:
✅ Protect its genetic identity from being diluted or misrepresented
✅ Allow producers to use the name legally in labeling and marketing
✅ Open the door to PDO or PGI certification
✅ Empower local economies through better product differentiation
✅ Attract tourism and educational interest in Corfu’s olive culture
✅ Preserve cultural and ecological heritage tied to the olive tree
This is not a matter of pride, it is a matter of agricultural and cultural survival.
